Emily Bradley, LCAT

Psychotherapist
NY
I specialize in helping people who always put themselves last, get better at prioritizing their own needs and boundaries. Perhaps you’re high-functioning on the outside, but inside you’re struggling with anxiety, depression and burnout. If you had childhood trauma, unreliable caregivers, or were adopted, you may have developed the belief that you can’t trust others to support you. Hyper-independence, perfectionism, people pleasing, overachieving, and conflict avoidance became a way of life. It’s only natural that your child self learned these habits to survive, but your adult self is ready for a new way. We’ll co-create a warm, safe space to explore the roots of the issue through family dynamics, trauma, attachment, and identity. I'm gentle and collaborative, putting you in control as you rediscover your sense of self, and rewrite old beliefs about your worth and the world. With over 20 years of experience, I offer talk therapy, practical somatic coping tools, and creative arts therapy for those who prefer expressing themselves beyond words. I offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) which helps with high-functioning anxiety and treatment-resistant depression. I’m adoption-competent as an adoptee myself. I work compassionately with substance use issues. I have lived experience as a creative, and know the unique struggles that come with creative careers and highly sensitive, spiritual temperaments. Imagine a more confident, grounded version of yourself showing up authentically at work and in relationships. Feeling engaged with life because you’re centering yourself and your dreams, not taking care of others all the time. This is absolutely within reach! If you’re ready to let go of old patterns & build the life you want, I'd love to help you get there. The biggest factor for success in therapy is the client-therapist connection, so let’s see if we’re a good fit for each other!

What should a new client know about working with you?

The first thing you'll notice about me is that I have a very gentle, soothing presence. I'm very openminded, warm, and I show up as a real person, not a blank slate. I've spent the last two decades honing my techniques for getting to the root of the issue, and making lasting changes. I encourage consistent attendance in therapy, because I see how important that is for growth. I’ll hold space for everything you need to express but I'm not a passive listener. During the session, I'll guide you toward insights and navigate difficult emotions with you. We’ll develop skills for listening to your intuition and regulating your nervous system, using mindfulness meditations to shift your perspective, or preparing for difficult conversations.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During our first few sessions, we’ll go over your history, identify specific goals, and collaborate on the methods that will be most effective and accessible for you. My approach is eclectic, and doesn’t typically involve structured formats or worksheets. I do encourage regular attendance, and actively practicing techniques and coping tools between sessions for maximum efficacy. My clients usually feel gradual relief within the first month and then sustained improvement over time. Two of my methods probably require more explanation: Art Therapy--If you're open to creativity, this can be a really deep and effective way of working. You'll need a few basic art supplies, nothing complicated. I usually give clients a prompt for a drawing or a collage that they can do on their own between sessions. They email me a photo of their artwork before our session begins so we can process it together. Sometimes we'll make art together in session. People are often amazed at the insights that come out of their own subconscious minds through these creative expressions. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy--I'm a provider of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) through an organization called Journey Clinical. They handle the medical screening, prescriptions, and monitoring. I provide preparation and integration within the therapeutic relationship. Ketamine is a legal, safe and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs. after treatment and last for up to 2 weeks. It works by helping the brain form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement. A careful screening process involving at least three therapy sessions is necessary to determine eligibility for KAP.
