Getting to know Emily Burns

I believe therapy should be a place where you can put down the pressure to have it all together. Whether you're navigating motherhood, processing trauma, grieving a loss, or adjusting to a major life transition, you deserve a space where you feel safe, supported, and understood. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), I tailor therapy to your unique needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. I use EMDR to help clients process traumatic experiences that continue to feel present today, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to strengthen emotion regulation and coping skills, mindfulness to help you reconnect with your body and quiet an overwhelmed mind, Motivational Interviewing to work through ambivalence and build confidence in making meaningful changes, and Solution-Focused Therapy to identify practical steps that help you move forward. I have a special passion for supporting women through matrescence, the emotional, physical, and identity changes that come with becoming a mother. As a mom myself, I understand how easy it is to lose yourself while caring for everyone else. My goal is to help you reconnect with yourself, feel more grounded in your everyday life, and build lasting change that extends far beyond our sessions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You don't have to navigate motherhood alone. Whether you're pregnant, newly postpartum, raising young children, or simply trying to figure out who you are in this new season of life, therapy can be a place to slow down and take care of you. I have a special passion for supporting women through matrescence, the emotional, physical, and identity changes that come with becoming a mother. My approach is warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed, and we'll move at a pace that feels right for you. Together, we'll make sense of what's been weighing on you, reconnect with the version of yourself that may feel lost, and help you feel more grounded, present, and confident in your everyday life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is all about getting to know you. We'll talk about what brought you to therapy, the challenges you're facing, and what you're hoping will feel different. I'll also take time to understand your relationships, life experiences, and what's been helpful (or not so helpful) in the past. By the end of our first few sessions, we'll have a clear picture of where you are and what you'd like to work toward. Once we have that foundation, we'll begin the deeper work together. Depending on your goals, that might look like processing past trauma with EMDR, learning skills to better manage anxiety and overwhelming emotions, understanding how your nervous system responds to stress, or navigating the identity shifts that come with motherhood and major life transitions. We'll also spend time recognizing the patterns that have helped you survive, while building new ones that help you feel more connected, present, and confident in your everyday life. Throughout the process, we'll check in regularly about what's working, what's changing, and what still feels challenging. My goal is for therapy to feel like a partnership where you leave each session with greater clarity, practical tools, and the confidence that you're making meaningful progress.
