Psychotherapist
860 22nd Ave, Ste 3, Coralville, IA
I have taken the long way to my career as a therapist, working as a child-care provider, educator, and in-home service provider before settling into a career in office-based therapy primarily with children. I love helping children with their big thoughts and feelings that they're having trouble sorting through. In therapy, we're able to make space for big emotions that can disrupt a childcare or classroom setting. Clients learn how to express their emotions in multiple ways, with strong preference given to verbalizing their feelings so that others can understand and help. I also love working with adults addressing their mental health. Through active listening and unconditional positive regard, I hope to provide a safe space where adults can explore how they wish to grow and change without fear of judgment. I offer play therapy for children for multiple reasons. Play is the work of children and the way children play often expresses their concerns and emotional state far better than they are able to put into words. As we play, children learn many important skills without therapy becoming a classroom. I also enjoy working with adults dealing with a variety of presenting concerns. I believe every person is the expert on their own life and what will work best for them--I'm here to offer a new perspective that sees and values a client's strengths and encourages them to address challenges in order to grow in new ways.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy is your space to think, talk, and make decisions for yourself. Whether you are an adult or a child, you are in charge of your session and you drive your treatment. I will do much more listening than talking, but I am happy to adjust my style if you let me know you'd like something different.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session with a new client is always an intake session where I go through a standard list of questions. This is the only session that is primarily question-and-answer and the only session where I typically have my computer in front of me for more than a minute or two. Sessions with teens and adults typically are guided by concerns those clients bring to session. Often a recent event will lead to a discussion of an ongoing problem in the client's life that they would like to handle in a different way or a relationship they would like to be different. I do not explicitly assign homework, but I like clients to leave therapy with a new perspective or a new strategy to try in the future. Sessions for children are often activity-based, though there is explicit discussion of feelings at the beginning of each session. Through play, whether it be a board game, an art activity, or unstructured play in the playroom, the child is often able to express thoughts and feelings they don't have the words for and work through them without needing to verbally problem-solve.
