Emily Maier, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NJ
I am a licensed clinical social worker with 10 years of clinical experience. I have a Bachelor's in Social Work from Rutger's University and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University. I have worked for 16 years in a hospital setting in New Jersey with extensive experience in crisis counseling. I am accustomed to meeting with people at genuinely hard moments and I believe this professional experience changes how I approach therapy as a provider. I believe that each client is an expert in their own experiences including trauma, emotions, culture and relationships. I want to understand what makes you feel comfortable and safe in sharing your life and therapeutic goals with me as this allows us to figure out together what interventions will actually help. My goal is to provide a warm, positive, and genuine atmosphere that helps my clients feel supported and valued throughout their healing experiences.

I believe that each client is an expert in their own experiences including trauma, emotions, culture and relationships. My goal is to provide a warm, positive, and genuine atmosphere that helps my clients feel supported and valued throughout their healing experiences.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I mostly utilize CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and motivational interviewing. I am trained in narrative, attachment based, and Bowen Family models and will integrate these models when they fit. I ask questions and I am direct. I will let you know what I'm noticing and check in with you regularly to make sure our work is useful and meeting your goals. I strongly believe in listening to my clients and building a course of therapy together that best meets your needs and therapeutic goals. I work with individuals, couples, and families dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, stress, substance use, end of life concerns and major life transitions.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In a first session, I want to hear from you. We will talk about what brought you to therapy, what you've already tried and what you are hoping to change. By the end of a first session, we should have a good sense of whether or not I'm a good fit for you and a direction for our work together. I am available, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 7 AM to 4 PM and Wednesday 7 AM to 8 PM. Sessions are 50 minutes, all via telehealth.
