Emily Wang, LPC Associate

Psychotherapist
100 N Central Expy, Ste 310, Richardson, TX
As an Asian American woman, child of immigrants, and queer, I understand how powerful it can feel to be human with someone who gets it. This is what initially drew me to counseling; I yearned to feel seen, heard, and valued in a system where I often felt overlooked. I bring a culturally affirming lens because your intersecting identities, background, and history are intertwined with your mental health and lived experience. I strive to cultivate a space that is warm, empowering, and anti-oppressive. My practice is grounded in relational-cultural theory, meaning I believe healing and growth occurs through connection. I also utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and expressive arts to help you move closer to the life you want to live. My specialties include LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, racial/cultural identity, children of immigrants, self-esteem, grief, perfectionism, anxiety, and depression. Thank you for considering working with me, I would be honored to be a fellow traveler on your journey!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Many folks come to therapy believing the therapist is some enlightened being like I’ve got it all together, but in reality, I’m human too. The way I see therapy is like you’re climbing your mountain over there and I’m climbing mine over here. From my mountain, I can see things that maybe you can’t see, such as a mountain goat up ahead, or an alternative path you could take, or you’re not using your gear effectively. I say this to show that I haven’t reached the top of my mountain; I’m not sitting back, taking it easy. Instead, I’m still climbing, making mistakes, and learning from them. We’re all the same; we’re climbing our mountain until the day we die. But wait… that’s not all! You can get better at climbing and at learning to appreciate the journey. And that’s what our work together is all about.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

First, I prioritize building our rapport; I recognize it can be difficult to feel safe without that foundation of trust, empathy, and understanding. Next, we explore what brings you to therapy and collaboratively identify goals. Then we continue our journey of awareness and understanding while I offer tools, perspective, and action items that may help you move toward your goals. Throughout the process, I encourage feedback; this space is for YOU and I want us to utilize this space in whatever way is beneficial to you.
