What should a new client know about working with you?

Along my path as a therapist, I have learned how to help people on their journey of recovery from addiction. I appreciate a harm reduction approach. I learned to meet people where they are, whether they are striving for total sobriety or something else. I also learned to look for the why behind the addiction. What is the pain you are trying to numb with substances? By addressing the root of the pain with compassion and empathy while also providing psychoeducation and skills, I learned that people can find their healing path. While learning how to help people on their journey of recovery from eating disorders I recognized the link between disordered eating behaviors and individuals’ struggle for control within a world filled with uncertainty and ambiguity. Through processing the societal messaging around body image, the integration of the tenants of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and the incorporation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills I saw individuals progressing towards body acceptance, self-confidence, and the adaptive use of positive coping strategies. I have also had the opportunity to incorporate EMDR therapy and Ego State work/parts work while seeing individuals at an outpatient level of care. I had the privilege of holding space for people as they engaged in the deep work of healing from trauma. I learned to administer and interpret the Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID) Analysis. This is a tool helpful to use in the assessment and diagnosis of dissociative disorders. This led to my increasing understanding of dissociation and how it is our body’s way of making that which is intolerable tolerable. With clients, I had the privilege of helping to facilitate the process of increasing their understanding and compassion for their inner system of parts.
