Eric Ward, LCPC

Psychotherapist
IL
I'm Dr. Eric Ward, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) with an MSEd in Counseling from Northern Illinois University. I've been working with men and couples for more than 30 years. It's my belief that when we end up dissatisfied and not living the life we envisioned-whether generally or in our relationships-it's often because we've lost sight of our goals, those goals don't line up with our partner, and we've lost the emotional and psychological connections with others that make that life achievable. My process is simple (but don't mistake simple for “easy”!). I help people identify the goals they have for their lives and relationships, I help them learn or re-learn the skills they need, and I help them put these new, effective practices into place. I am married and have three daughters and one granddaughter. In my “free” time, I am both an author and a podcaster. You can find both my books and the podcast on our PsycWard website.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work really well with patients who have very clear expectations about what they want from therapy. I often tell people they shouldn't expect to see me for a long time. My goal is to give you the tools you need to be successful on your own - whether as an individual or as a couple. I use quite a bit of humor in my therapy work and am often told that I'm very easy to talk and relate to. I'm very direct, so don't expect a lot of "so, what I hear you telling me..." kinds of statements. :)

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We'll start with a simple assessment. It's less complicated than it sounds. In our first meeting, we'll cover: what is bringing you to therapy; what you've already tried to fix the problems; where you're struggling; what your goals are; and a little bit about your personal history. Then we'll make a plan and get to work!
