Erin Borton, LCPC, CADC

Psychotherapist
3000 Dundee Rd, Ste 211, Northbrook, IL
I am a trauma focused therapist who has been counseling for nearing 20 years. I typically work with clients who have more than one issue they want to address. Clients with a combination of Complex Trauma/PTSD, Relationship/Attachment Struggles, Addiction, Eating Disorders/Body Image, Chronic Illness/Pain, Severe Anxiety, ADHD, and ASD (high functioning autism) make up the bulk of my clientele. I can provide specialty treatments such as EMDR (for many issues) and ERP/Exposure Therapy (for OCD clients). I hold my CADC (Drug and alcohol certification.) I am a therapist who will be more actively engaged in the therapy session by questioning, teaching and making suggestions. My knowledge of relationships and trauma also helps us dive deeper into the question “why do I keep doing (blank) and how do I stop.” I want to help you build healthy relationships with others and learn to like yourself again.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I know meeting a new therapist can be intimidating. I aim to provide a laid back, non-judgmental, environment where you can just be yourself. After getting to know each other and developing some trust, I will challenge you from time to time if needed. I see therapy as a collaborative effort; not expert to patient. You bring your knowledge of yourself. I bring my years of experience and training. Together we figure it out and you make progress towards your goals. Feel free to ask questions, let me know if a technique isn’t working for you, etc.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During a typical session we will discuss what challenges, triggers, or stuck points you encountered since the previous session. I typically use these emotions to help you dive deeper into the therapy work from your treatment plan. If I notice patterns, we will explore them and see if those behavior/thought patterns still are working for you or if another alternative might work better. I do use both psychoeducation, teaching techniques/skills, etc. as well as more traditional talk therapy in the session. Sometimes therapeutic homework may be assigned depending on what we are working on. For example, for anxiety you may be doing a "thought log" if we are doing CBT. For OCD, you may keeping track of exposures. Some of my clients will assign themselves a SMART goal at the end of the session and I will check in at the beginning of the next session to help with accountability..
