Erin Schmid, ALMFT

Psychotherapist
122 S Michigan Ave, Suite 1441, Chicago, IL
Hello, and welcome! I provide virtual therapy for adults, couples, and adult family systems experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, burnout, overthinking, and major life transitions. Clients often begin therapy feeling overwhelmed or stuck in patterns such as anxiety in relationships, people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, codependency, fear of rejection, or emotional disconnection, along with trust and communication difficulties. I specialize in attachment-based therapy and adult relational systems, focusing on how family-of-origin and intergenerational patterns shape trust, boundaries, and self-worth in adulthood. I work with individuals, couples, and adult family members in both romantic and family contexts, with an emphasis on adult relationships rather than child-focused or parenting work. Together, we identify and change long-standing relational patterns by increasing emotional awareness, strengthening boundaries, and reducing overthinking and reactivity. I integrate attachment-based, psychodynamic, and family systems approaches, along with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) informed strategies to support emotional regulation and behavior change. Treatment is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to your goals, with the aim of increasing clarity, stability, and connection.

Getting to know Erin Schmid

Hello, and welcome! I provide virtual therapy for adults, couples, and adult family systems experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, burnout, overthinking, and major life transitions. Clients often begin therapy feeling overwhelmed or stuck in patterns such as anxiety in relationships, people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, codependency, fear of rejection, or emotional disconnection, along with trust and communication difficulties. What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients often describe my style as warm, collaborative, and thoughtful. I believe therapy is most effective when you feel understood, challenged appropriately, and actively involved in the process. Together, we explore the patterns influencing your emotions, relationships, and sense of self, with the goal of creating meaningful, lasting change. My approach is integrative, trauma-informed, and grounded in attachment theory, drawing from psychodynamic, family systems, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and emotionally focused approaches when they best fit your needs. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model, I tailor treatment to your goals, strengths, and lived experience. Whether you're working through anxiety, relationship challenges, grief, or long-standing family dynamics, I strive to create a space where you feel respected, supported, and able to explore difficult experiences with curiosity and compassion.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session focuses on understanding what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, relevant history, and what you hope to gain from treatment. We'll also discuss whether my approach is a good fit for your needs and, when appropriate, whether additional resources or a higher level of care would be more beneficial. From there, we develop treatment goals together and begin identifying the emotional, relational, and behavioral patterns contributing to your current challenges. Depending on your needs, our work may include increasing emotional awareness, strengthening boundaries, improving communication, processing grief or life transitions, and developing practical strategies for managing anxiety, stress, and difficult emotions. As therapy progresses, we build insight while applying what you're learning to everyday life. My approach balances reflection with practical change, helping you develop greater flexibility, healthier relationships, and a more secure way of relating to yourself and others.
