Esperanza Martinez, LCSW

Esperanza Martinez, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NM
Born and raised in New Mexico, I have experienced growing up in a traditional Hispanic household and now, throughout my adulthood, learned to break through unhealthy norms and how to help others broaden their horizon. I have an extensive background working with at-risk youth, families, and those who have experienced chronic trauma. I graduated with my BSW in 2020 and my MSW (Master of Social Work) in 2021 from New Mexico Highlands University. After getting my degrees, I worked with the NM Children, Youth, and Families Department. In my personal time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, art, and playing with our three dogs. My work and personal experiences, I feel, have served me in being a better mental health provider and being able to understand/accept others, wholly, and with openness to who they are.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me as your therapist, you will find that I strive to be open-minded, empowering, and supportive. You are the expert; that said, be open to being challenged, as I will be direct when necessary to meet your goals. I use a range of different modalities to meet your needs, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, family systems therapy, attachment therapy, narrative therapy, a person-centered approach, and positive psychology. For clients who are showing their efforts and in my area, I love to offer "walk and talk" sessions, where I meet a client at a neutral park, walking path, or trail, if comfortable.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, also called the intake session, I'd like to get to know you and provide an opportunity for you to ask questions. I will need to ask about your background, but I always encourage clients to feel they have the option to ease into therapy and the hard questions. I hope to make you comfortable and feel safe in our shared space. After your intake session, we will create goals that our regular sessions will usually focus on. I am intentional in my exercises, activities, and strategies; however, I always encourage my clients to advocate for their needs. Whether you need to vent or find a solution, our sessions are a safe space to let me know what you want to prioritize. I ask my clients to be open to trying interventions and exploring strategies that may help them meet their goals.
