Getting to know Eva Ugarte

My passions include Internal Family Systems, mindfulness, addiction, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, and wellness. I am an avid student of psychology and anything wellness-related. I hold a Master's in Counseling Psychology from Florida International University. For over 20 years, I have worked with clients dealing with trauma, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, and grief. I love the connection created in the intimacy of the therapeutic process and pride myself on seeing my clients thrive.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe you are the absolute expert in your life. I'd love to learn about you to nurture our therapeutic relationship to find the best tools that will get you to meet your goals. I believe beautiful things can happen when the light is shed in the right direction. What is missing in your life? How can I help?

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I find "naming" the issue can be clarifying, and the first session is devoted to exploring what is going on and getting to the root cause of a person's discomfort. I believe in creating a safe space so that clients can express themselves, feel understood, and gain insight. I adjust to my clients' rhythms. More proactive clients can count on receiving homework and learning coping mechanisms. More passive clients can rest assured that they won't be pushed to do anything they are not ready for.

This was my first ever experience with therapy or even generally seeking help for mental health. It felt really good to have a completely unbiased and detached personality to be able to open up to and hear my thoughts and pain out, and to get their input on things. I look forward to continuing further and working on myself with this therapist there to help.
