Getting to know Evian Adams

I am a clinical social worker who approaches therapy as a collaborative, relational process grounded in respect for each person’s lived experience. My work is informed by a systems-oriented perspective, recognizing that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are shaped not only by individual history, but by relationships, culture, identity, access to resources, and broader social and structural conditions. I draw from cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavioral, and narrative approaches, integrating practical skill-building with space for reflection and meaning-making. I believe people carry inherent strengths and multiple stories about themselves, including ones shaped by resilience and possibility, and that meaningful change occurs when clients feel understood within the full context of their lives.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Others often describe working with me as collaborative, grounded, and thoughtful. I strive to create a space that feels respectful, honest, and emotionally safe, where clients are not expected to have everything figured out before beginning. You do not need to know “what’s wrong” or “what to work on” right away—we can discover that together. I approach therapy with curiosity rather than judgment and view clients as the experts of their own experiences. I am attentive to the ways identity, culture, family, and systemic pressures shape daily life, and I welcome open conversation about what feels helpful, challenging, or unclear in the therapeutic process. Feedback is always encouraged, and therapy can move at a pace that feels sustainable and supportive.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy typically begins with getting to know you and your context—what brings you in, what you’ve already tried, what matters to you, and what you hope might change. Together, we identify goals that feel meaningful and realistic, while remaining open to revisiting and adjusting them over time. Ongoing sessions may include a combination of reflection, conversation, and practical skill-building. This can involve exploring patterns in thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships; developing coping and emotional regulation skills; and examining the stories you hold about yourself and your experiences. We also pay attention to how relationships, social expectations, and structural factors influence stress, identity, and well-being. Throughout the process, therapy remains collaborative and flexible. Change is understood as both personal and relational, and progress may look like increased insight, strengthened coping skills, shifts in perspective, or changes in how you relate to yourself and others. The work unfolds at a pace guided by your needs, values, and sense of readiness.
