Getting to know Farbod Khalafi

My name is Dr. Farbod Khalafi (He/him/his), and thank you for taking an important first step on your mental health journey. Finding a good fit for a therapist can be daunting at times, but don't give up! I approach therapy with a focus not only on helping you learn skills to cope with your mental health challenges but also on helping you learn more about yourself. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My approach tends to gravitate towards Schema therapy, CBT, DBT, and Psychodynamic methods, depending on your treatment goals. I like to adjust based on what you present in session since I strongly believe therapy is a dynamic and ever-flowing process. I specialize in anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, self-esteem, and stress. I think of treatment goals not only as markers signaling the conclusion of our work together but also as a way to honor the progress you make along the way. Some goals are hard to put into words, but I'm here to help you every step of the way to bring to life what you want to work on in therapy. In terms of communication, I make my best effort to model assertive communication, though even I can drop the ball sometimes. When I notice errors, I acknowledge them and encourage clients to bring any concerns into session. I generally interact with a mostly casual demeanor (while being serious where it counts!), and I believe a bit of silliness can help along the way. My listening style is non-assuming and active-I avoid making assumptions about what people mean and strive to clarify and let you inform me. Beyond the completion of our treatment goals, I see success in therapy when I am no longer needed and you find the parts of your life you missed or want to gain. Progress can look different depending on your goals, but always remember you're likely doing better than you think with respect to your progress.
