Floyd Bumpers, LISW

Psychotherapist
IA
My approach My theoretical approach is primarily strength-based and cognitive behavioral. I also prefer to use some directive play therapy techniques with children under 10 at times. My focus I typically work with children, teens, and adults, many of whom have been involved with the Department of Human Services. I often help clients navigate the often confusing world of the Department of Human Services. I also work with children in the school system, often in the school environment. My communication style I tend to be very soft-spoken and laid back. I try to put clients at ease as they meet with me. I find that when clients deal with the Department, they are often leery of counselors and other workers. I work to reassure clients that I am not an employee of DHS, but my job is to help them become the best version of themselves. My journey to mental healthcare I initially decided to become a therapist due to the influence of a social worker my father introduced me to when I was in middle school and my high school counselor. Their influence helped shape my life and point me in the right direction. I always felt better after sessions with them, and the seed was planted in my mind in high school that this type of work is what I wanted to do. I am driven by the thought of helping others become the best version of themselves. My education I earned my Master's in Social Work from the University of Northern Iowa. My goals for you I ask clients what they want to accomplish in therapy. If they don't know, I may make suggestions based on their reasons for initiating therapy and ask if they agree with those suggestions. My first session with you Clients should expect the first session to be a time of getting to know one another. They should also expect a relaxing and comfortable environment.
