I’m Gabby Vella, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) originally from New York. I earned my Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University at Buffalo and my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Vermont, and I now practice in North Carolina while working toward full licensure. My background spans community mental health, crisis intervention, inpatient psychiatry, and residential care — settings that have shown me just how much resilience people carry into therapy, even during life’s hardest moments. I work with adolescents, adults, and couples, with particular focus on trauma and EMDR, anxiety and depression, grief, life transitions, and LGBTQ+ affirming care, drawing on approaches like ACT, CBT, DBT, person-centered, and feminist therapy to fit what works best for you. Above all, I want you to feel safe being yourself in our sessions. Therapy works best in a space that’s warm, honest, and free of judgment — and that’s what I aim to create with every client I work with.

Above all, I want you to feel safe being yourself in our sessions. Therapy works best in a space that’s warm, honest, and free of judgment — and that’s what I aim to create with every client I work with.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and there’s no pressure to have everything figured out before we begin. I move at your pace and won’t ask you to share more than you’re ready to. I bring a warm, down-to-earth style to our sessions — you can expect me to be genuine, curious, and honest with you, not clinical or distant. I believe you’re the expert on your own life, so rather than telling you what to do, I work alongside you to understand what’s going on and figure out what actually helps. I’m LGBTQ+ affirming and welcome clients of every identity and background. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, trauma, a difficult relationship, or you just feel stuck, my goal is for you to leave our work together feeling more like yourself, not less.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before your first session, our client care coordinator, Heather, will reach out to finish up paperwork and make sure we’re a good match for what you’re looking for — that way your first session isn’t spent on forms. Your first one to three sessions are focused on gathering information and getting to know each other. If you’re a teen, a parent joins you for that first session; if you’re coming in as a couple, both partners attend together. After that, sessions are tailored specifically to you rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. We build a treatment plan together so that what we work on in session reflects what’s actually important to you. The whole process is collaborative — you’re the expert on your own life, and my role is to bring the clinical knowledge. Things adjust over time as needed; many clients start with weekly sessions and space them out as symptoms improve.
