“I never thought my healing journey would start with a male therapist; especially after everything I’ve been through with men in general. But honestly, this experience has been the total opposite of what I expected… in the best way. From our very first session, I felt seen, heard, and genuinely understood. Our sessions are so engaging that I don’t even realize when the hour is over. What really stands out is how he picks up on the little things, even things I don’t say out loud. Like, imagine someone being able to read your energy through a screen. It’s wild. He’s created a space where I actually feel safe. I was super hesitant at first, but now things just come out without me even trying. And that’s rare. I’m just really grateful I found someone who makes me feel like I matter. If you’re thinking about therapy and want someone who’s present, grounded, and truly pays attention….. Just do it. Just pick him! I really couldn’t recommend him enough.”

Getting to know Garfield Thomas

I provide compassionate, research-driven therapy for individuals and couples who are ready to create meaningful and lasting change in their lives. My integrative approach draws from evidence-based practices and is tailored to meet each client’s unique needs, with an emphasis on developing practical, real-world strategies that foster growth, resilience, and emotional well-being. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York with advanced training and experience in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress related to feelings of unfulfillment or lack of direction. I bring over 8 years of experience in mental health counseling and more than 16 years of experience in the behavioral health field as a whole, along with years of supervisory experience. My sessions are collaborative, supportive, and goal-oriented, creating a space where clients feel understood while actively working toward their personal goals. Important: After booking your appointment, please complete all consent and intake forms promptly to avoid any delays in the start of your services. This also allows us to verify your insurance and identity. I look forward to supporting you as you take this important step toward positive change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients can expect a compassionate, supportive, and research-driven approach to therapy. I take an integrative stance, drawing from evidence-based methods such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and family systems approaches. Alongside these methods, I also use a humanistic approach—creating a non-judgmental, person-centered space that emphasizes empathy, authenticity, and each client’s inherent capacity for growth. My style is collaborative and goal-oriented—I work alongside clients to build insight while also focusing on practical strategies for lasting, positive change. I work best with individuals who are motivated to take active steps toward growth, maintain open communication, and share updates throughout the process. This helps ensure therapy remains responsive, effective, and aligned with your goals. To ensure a smooth start, please complete intake forms within 12 hours of booking. If you cannot complete them in that timeframe, kindly cancel and rebook before the 24-hour window to avoid financial impact. After booking, be sure to check your email for a secure link from Greenwood Mental Health Counseling to access the intake forms and your therapist’s virtual office.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A therapy session is your judgment-free safe space, where you are recognized as the expert of your own life. In our work together, the first step is to collaboratively define your treatment goals—goals that inspire insight, encourage growth, and open new possibilities. Because every client is unique, our process is tailored to your needs. In a typical session, we’ll explore the areas you’d like to address, clarify patterns or challenges, and set clear objectives that guide your progress. Sessions are interactive and supportive, blending reflection with practical strategies to help you move toward meaningful and lasting change.

Garfield is the best therapist, an absolute gift from heaven. During my challenging season of life, he created a safe place and never judged me. I felt comfortable to voice out trauma as a child I never told a soul in almost 40yrs. He listened deeply, remembered details from past sessions and offered insightful and practical exercises that helped me see things from a more realistic perspective. I truly value Garfield’s honesty and compassionate approach which made me feel supported and understood. I can honestly say that I’ve experienced significant personal growth and feel renewed strength and confidence to face life challenges. I wholeheartedly recommend Garfield Thomas to anyone who is seeking a truly dedicated and effective therapist. I am healed and I thank God for blessing me an angel.
I cannot recommend Garfield highly enough. From the very first session, he created a warm, safe, and nonjudgmental space where I felt truly heard and understood. His deep empathy, insightful questions, and thoughtful guidance have helped me uncover patterns, gain clarity, and build the tools I need to navigate life’s challenges with more confidence and peace. What I appreciate most is Garfield’s ability to balance compassion with practical strategies, every session leaves me feeling both supported and empowered to take real steps toward growth. He has an incredible gift for remembering details, connecting dots, and reflecting back my progress in a way that makes me feel seen and valued. Working with Garfield has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I walk away from our sessions feeling lighter, stronger, and more grounded in who I am. If you’re looking for a therapist who is both genuinely caring and highly skilled, you will be in the very best hands.

I cannot say enough good things about Garfield. If I could give this man 100 stars I would. I've done therapy on and off for years, and his treatment has been the most effective and helpful. He is kind, truly listens and presents achievable and realistic coping skills that help. If you need a therapist, look no further than Garfield.

I've been seeing Garfield for therapy about a month now. During my time with him he is always on time, professional, resourceful, and makes me feel comfortable which is ideal for me because I've always been skeptical of therapy. It's only been a month but I am relieved because I'm finally realizing I'm not crazy and my feelings are valid and real. I'm just traumatized and need to heal, which Garfield is helping me do through his experience but also evidence based techniques ( he always has worksheets to back up what he is suggesting to me) that have worked. Grateful for his guidance, help and I'm looking forward to being truly at peace with my trauma.
Working with Garfield has been a great experience. He listens, responds with caution and he applies some strategies to help you get through your struggles. The exercises giving while in session is to help you find out the cause of your problem, how to conquer and eliminate. Garfield is very understanding. He does not judge you for your poor decision making or provide any negative feedbacks. He uses kind words and digs deep into your life to help you recognize the problem. It’s not always easy taking accountability for your doings but it worth every truth to keep a healthy relationship with yourself. I would highly recommend Garfield to help you with any struggles that you may have and do not know how to resolve and conquer. He’s one of the best thus far.
I really felt comfortable talking to him he was a great listener very attentive to what I was speaking about which is something I need from my therapist

Look no further than Garfield Thomas if you're seeking a compassionate, empathetic, and non-judgmental therapist. From the first call to set up my appointment, I felt understood and welcome. Garfield creates a safe space where you can explore your thoughts and emotions without fear of judgement. He listens attentively and takes the time to understand your unique experiences and needs. What you disclose is kept confidential and private. What I appreciate most about Garfield is his ability to listen without interrupting or pushing his own agenda. He truly cares about his clients and takes the time to understand their unique experiences and needs. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship issues, Garfield is equipped to help you find healing and hope. He has helped me make significant progress in just a few weeks, and I highly recommend him to anyone in need of skilled and compassionate therapy.
    The professionalism displayed was impressive.
My therapy sessions with Mr. Thomas are great. He has helped me with finding better methods to deal with stress or past trauma. I like that we mostly end our sessions with a plan or a goal in mind to reach before our next session. He’s very knowledgeable and I would definitely recommend him.
My meeting are via telehealth. Mr. Thomas is always professional, respectful, non-judgmental and have a flexible attitude. Highly recommend.
Dr. Garfield is a determined counselor who wants the best for his clients. It’s been a short amount of time, but therapy is helping me slowly. Dr. Garfield has been able to instill the fact that my life is about me, myself and I. I recommend him to anyone out there who needs someone to talk to.
