Garrett Wheeler graduated from Saint Mary's College of California with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology. For two years Garrett served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Baran, Kosovo. There he taught English as a foreign language to middle school students at Deshmoret e Kombit; the local school. Aside from promoting English literacy, Garrett provided opportunities for social engagement. And in the community of Qallapek, Garrett wrote a grant on behalf of farmers enabling them to begin their own dairy business. Aspiring to continue work in education, Garrett became a National Teaching Fellow for Citizen Schools upon returning to the States. Affiliated with Americorps, Citizen Schools aims to reduce the opportunity gap by partnering with schools in low-income communities. During this event, students showcase projects created throughout the year. After working for Citizen Schools, Garrett accepted a position at Think College Now Elementary. As the special education teacher of a counseling enriched classroom, Garrett worked with a variety of professionals. Garrett offered specialized academic instruction and implemented strategies designed to curb challenging behaviors. He also wrote an individualized education plan (IEP) for students on his caseload. This documentation was then presented to guardians and key stakeholders. Hoping to become more familiar with the impact of trauma, Garrett attended graduate school at Case Western Reserve University. He graduated with a Master's degree in Social Work. In addition, Garrett obtained a certificate in trauma-informed practice. Classes mainly focused on pathways to recovery. During this time, Garrett was also an intern at Beech Brook; a nonprofit which provides behavioral health services. Garrett offered individual therapy to high school students with a variety of challenges. He helps others to gain insight into their own behaviors. Outside of work, Garrett enjoys soccer, hiking/camping, ashtanga yoga, and meditation.
