Gary Potter, LIMHP

Psychotherapist
NE
Hi there, I'm Gary! I am a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner, having met the requirements to operate my mental health practice. I have been working as a counselor for over 25 years, supporting adolescents and adults with various emotional and relational needs. My approach I am somewhat eclectic, drawing from various theoretical approaches. I especially like using Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy as it helps empower clients to take charge of their reactions to the trauma of life that often brings them to therapy. My focus I work with couples dealing with anxiety and depression from relationship conflicts. I am also comfortable working with those struggling with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. I work with unresolved trauma from past abusive experiences clients have had. My communication style I am very interactive with my clients. I want anyone I meet with to feel accepted and validated. I take a nonjudgmental approach and remember that my clients are the experts on their lives; I am invited into their journey to help them figure out what works best. My journey to mental healthcare I originally went to college in 1972 to be a pastor, earning a degree in Bible, Theology, and Psychology. After a major life transition in 1991, I returned to college at the University of Nebraska to earn a master’s degree in Counseling, believing my life experience and education put me in a place to relate to pain and trauma and help people sort through their struggles while feeling valued and accepted. I enjoy seeing positive changes as clients begin to experience healing and freedom. My goals for you I work collaboratively with clients to determine their goals—what they want to accomplish, not what I think they need to do.
