Gary Pustel, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
Our current world is no doubt a confusing one. Even worse, when you're experiencing a challenging time in your life, time may feel as though it is standing still. Sometimes, there simply are no "right or wrong" answers, but solutions may be closer in reach than you think. My goal is to help you navigate through challenges-the grey areas-that make you feel powerless. While working closely together, my primary aim is to help you discover your own unique center of gravity that will refine your sense of confidence, hope, and meaning. I bring to this work a strong educational foundation, including a Bachelor's degree from Stony Brook University, a Juris Doctor from St. John's University, and a Master's in Forensic Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I view therapy as an opportunity to engage in open discussion using a nonjudgmental and solution-driven approach. I use a combination of cognitive-behavioral and relational techniques to help motivate healthy improvements.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am an advocate for open, honest communication throughout sessions that help facilitate meaningful change. I also frequently use different styles of questioning that are designed to help deconstruct faulty thinking patterns that lead to heightened emotional states and unhealthy decision-making. Together, you and I will work collaboratively to find the best solutions that are uniquely tailored to you and your current circumstances. I am very receptive to feedback and strongly encourage transparency throughout the therapeutic process. Your decision to engage in therapy is a courageous one - you are taking a chance on change, one worth taking.
