Genis Timmerman, LMFT

Psychotherapist
ME
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Maine, dedicated to helping individuals and couples navigate the complex emotional challenges that arise from trauma, relational distress, and life transitions. Welcome! My approach to therapy varies depending on the needs of my clients. For individual clients, I use trauma-focused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Brief Solution Focused Therapy (BSFT), and Mindfulness. For couples counseling, I use evidence-based modalities like Gottman, Various Systems Theory, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Together, we create goals to work towards, and often, homework is given. My ideal therapy client is anyone who comes to sessions with a genuine willingness to engage in the therapeutic process, even when it feels challenging. These clients are open to self-exploration, curious about their patterns, and motivated to understand the deeper roots of their emotional and relational struggles. They arrive ready to actively participate, whether that means sharing their story, asking questions, reflecting on past experiences, or trying new tools and insights outside of the session. While they may not always know exactly where to start, their commitment to growth, healing, and personal responsibility creates a strong foundation for meaningful and lasting change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My communication style as a therapist is grounded in authenticity, warmth, and clarity. I strive to create a space where clients feel genuinely seen and supported, while also feeling gently challenged when needed. I communicate in a way that is both compassionate and direct, honoring each client’s unique experience while offering honest reflections and thoughtful guidance to support their growth. I believe that real healing happens in a relationship built on trust and transparency, so I aim to speak with intention, empathy, and respect. Clients can expect me to be fully present, engaged, and attuned as we work collaboratively toward their goals. My journey to becoming a therapist has been deeply shaped by a lifelong commitment to serving others. I am a combat Veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. As a combat veteran, I have witnessed the profound impact that trauma, stress, and disconnection can have on individuals and families. These experiences instilled in me a deep empathy and a strong desire to support others in their healing. Throughout my life, I’ve been drawn to humanitarian work and roles that prioritize compassion, resilience, and service. Becoming a therapist felt like a natural extension of this path, a way to combine my personal experiences with professional training to help others navigate their struggles and reclaim a sense of peace and purpose. My work is grounded in respect, authenticity, and a sincere belief in the strength of the human spirit.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work collaboratively with clients to identify and clarify their therapeutic goals, ensuring they reflect each individual’s unique needs, values, and hopes for change. Together, we break these goals into manageable, realistic steps that provide structure and direction for our work. Throughout the process, I regularly check in on progress, celebrate growth, and adjust goals as needed to stay aligned with where the client is emotionally and mentally. Whether the focus is on reducing anxiety, healing from trauma, or improving relationships, I use goal setting as a flexible and empowering tool to help clients stay grounded in their progress and feel a sense of purpose and momentum in their therapeutic journey. In our first session, you can expect a warm, nonjudgmental space where we’ll begin getting to know each other and explore what brought you to therapy. I’ll ask questions about your current concerns, personal history, and goals for our work together, while also inviting you to share at your own pace. This session is also a chance for you to ask questions about the therapeutic process and to see how it feels to work with me. My priority is to create a safe and supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered as we begin this journey toward healing and growth.
