Getting to know Gloria Gitlin

Distress in a marriage, divorce, and disagreements about child rearing, caused me to rethink all that I had valued in the past. At the time, all that I thought I knew and believed was put into question. My cultural and spiritual beliefs also were questioned. I began a search for something that could give me some peace in what I was experiencing. My internal resources were limited, although previously I thought all was well. I was teaching at the time and courses in Psychology were available to me. I began by taking one Psychology course and ended up getting a Masters in it because it provided me some insight into what I was going through. I then decided to take additional courses in Counseling and obtained an LPC. At that point, I thought I could help others in distress gain some insight and some peace in their situations. Thus, my journey in counseling began My approach First and foremost I listen. I try to understand the motive for the expression and try to figure out how this fits into the individual's life. Then I ask questions. I use what is called the "Socratic " method--asking relevant questions to lead the individual to answers which might shed some light into the individual's thoughts and/or behavior. Sometimes we don't know why we do certain things, but when probed, we discover things we did not know that we knew. Then we can explore further down the path of self-discovery, something I think we all seek. My focus My goal for clients is to gain independence from external factors, which tend to control us. These factors stem from our experiences, and are not truly of our own making. Once we figure out what is influencing our thinking and behavior, we can start working on the reality of these factors. And from here start the trek towards freedom to be ourselves. My communication style First and foremost I listen. I try to understand the motive for the expression and try to figure out how this fits into the individual's life. Then I ask questions.
