Psychotherapist
HI
Hi there, I'm Graham! My name is Graham Dixon, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Hawaii. I hold a Master’s degree in School Counseling from The University of Texas Permian Basin. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and concentrate on Positive Psychology—the seeking of happiness. We explore methods of becoming happier while tackling barriers to positive change in the form of negative assumptions. **My approach** My basic approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We explore negative beliefs about self and the world that lead to counterproductive behavior. That behavior, in turn, leads to more negative beliefs. And thus the cycle continues. Our focus is on interrupting and ending this cycle through transforming negative beliefs and behavior. **My focus** I treat a whole range of clients. In recent years, I have concentrated on couples therapy, those suffering from anxiety and depression, and individuals with PTSD. I am most comfortable treating relationship problems, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. **My communication style** The sessions have a relaxed atmosphere of mutual respect and exploration. Humor is often used, as well as a concentration on positivity and happiness rather than simply attempting to counter negativity. In other words, we concentrate on what makes us happy, rather than simply avoiding unhappiness. **My journey to mental healthcare** I was born and raised in England but came to America on a Fulbright Scholarship at the age of twenty-two. It was meant to be for two years, but more than thirty years later, I still find myself here. My original career was as a Theatre professor—my Ph.D. is in Dramatic Art—but as I went into university administration, I became more interested in the emotional aspects of supervising faculty and students. Eventually, I found the real-life dramas of actual life more compelling than the created ones on stage.
