Hailey Shelton, MCoun

Psychotherapist
TX
The search for the right therapist can be daunting. There are so many of us, so the term “if the shoe fits” begins to take over. But, we are not a one-size-fits-all. My hope is that this intro will help you in that process. I have found the best connections, and thus the best outcomes, start with being genuine. My approach is personable and authentic. We can laugh, we can cuss, we can yell, we can cry. We can spend session being productive and goal-focused, or we can spend the session talking about the new album you listened. Meeting clients where they are at is important to me. It can be hard to open up to a stranger, but I am here to tell you that I am human too. I understand struggling with anxiety, navigating tough conversations, and dealing with daily obstacles. We all need help at times.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach with individual therapy mostly incorporates distress tolerance, crisis management, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills; I believe these pillars can be applied to most challenges in life. For couples, I primarily pull from Gottman Method. Research clearly shows how effective it can be, and I have seen significant change within relationships just with a few sessions. With families, I like to focus on strengths and what works, then lean into expanding on those strengths. Overall, my specialties are helping strengthen communication styles, build healthier relationships, and remaining true to your identity through that process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our initial session is spent getting to know you and your story. For individuals, I will have you paint me a picture of what life has been like for you to lead you up to this point and what is happening now. Couples and families are structured a bit different; we will discuss some individual history, but primarily focus on the relationship. Second sessions are usually for setting goals and creating a plan of action. Finally, by the third session, we start working towards change.
