Getting to know Hanifa Akpe
Through my range of experiences, I have acquired skills and knowledge to effectively work with clients from a variety of backgrounds. I have worked with a wide range of populations including, but not limited to, those who have experienced trauma, adults, children, adolescents, couples, and the LGBTQ+ community. My history working with social service agencies has allowed me to practice psychotherapy in schools, psychiatric hospitals, the jail setting, foster care homes, residential treatment facilities, and more. Through my private practice experiences, I have worked in the outpatient setting with a diverse client population and diverse presenting issues including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, mental health disorders, interpersonal relationship problems, race and identity issues, stage of life challenges, and difficulty managing life stressors.
As a clinician with a social work background and a Master's in Clinical Counseling from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, I have the ability to holistically assess the needs and concerns of clients while incorporating their history into presenting problems. As a result, I view therapy from a systemic lens and strive to include all aspects of a person in their treatment. While I tend to approach the therapeutic relationship and treatment from both person-centered and trauma-informed perspectives, I am a strong advocate that insight alone is not enough. Thus, I regularly utilize CBT, DBT, and other behavioral techniques, as well as motivational interviewing and mindfulness. I believe that accurate diagnosis, rapport building, and appreciation of diversity are imperative aspects of the therapeutic alliance and treatment.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Therapy is a relationship; I always tell potential clients that if you do not have a good therapeutic relationship with your therapist, then you cannot do good work. I like to collaborate with my clients to set goals and work toward those goals and I am very engaged in session. Potential clients should also know that the work and progress happens outside of sessions. I like to work with clients who actually want to do the work to meet their identified goals.
