Hannah Gavios, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
I believe therapy can be a space to feel understood, gain new perspectives, and discover strengths you may not always recognize in yourself. My approach to therapy is shaped by both my clinical training and my own experience navigating adversity. After sustaining a spinal cord injury in Thailand in 2016, I had to learn how to navigate life with paralysis and rebuild my sense of identity, purpose, and possibility. That experience ultimately inspired me to change careers and enter the mental health field. It taught me that while we cannot always control what happens to us, we can work toward changing how we respond to life’s challenges and continue creating a meaningful life. As a licensed mental health counselor and yoga teacher, I bring a warm, genuine, and person-centered approach to therapy. I especially enjoy supporting clients navigating trauma, anxiety, emotional regulation, life transitions, fear, self-doubt, relationship challenges, and periods of feeling stuck or uncertain. My work incorporates CBT, DBT skills, trauma-informed care, mindfulness, meditation, breath-work, journaling, positive psychology, and strengths-based approaches. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all method, I tailor therapy to the individual and meet clients where they are.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect me to show up as warm, empathetic, genuine, and nonjudgmental. I want therapy to feel like a place where you can be completely honest about what you are experiencing while also feeling supported and challenged to grow. I believe you are the expert on your own life, so therapy with me is collaborative. We may explore patterns in your thoughts, emotions, relationships, or behaviors that are keeping you stuck, while also identifying the strengths and coping skills you already have. From there, we can develop practical tools and new perspectives that help you move forward. I am not here to tell you how you “should” live your life. My role is to help you understand yourself more deeply, explore possibilities, and make changes that feel meaningful to you. Progress looks different for everyone, and together we will define what progress means for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first few sessions are an opportunity for me to get to know you beyond a diagnosis or list of symptoms. We will talk about what brought you to therapy, what you are currently experiencing, your history, relationships, strengths, challenges, and what you hope will be different in your life. Together, we will identify goals for therapy and develop an approach that fits your individual needs. Depending on what you are working through, sessions may include exploring thoughts and emotions, recognizing patterns, reframing unhelpful beliefs, developing coping and emotional regulation skills, processing difficult experiences, or practicing mindfulness and grounding techniques. I may incorporate tools from CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, mindfulness, breath-work, journaling, positive psychology, and strengths-based therapy. Some sessions may be more reflective, while others may focus on concrete strategies you can practice between sessions. I regularly check in about what is and is not working so that therapy remains collaborative and relevant to your goals.
