Hanne Steen, LMFT

Psychotherapist
2810 E Del Mar Blvd, Pasadena, CA
I grew up as a Third Culture Kid, meaning I moved around all over the world, adapting again and again to cultures outside my own. This gave me a wide breadth of understanding of the world and our commonalities as humans, as well as presenting certain obstacles that I have had to overcome as an adult. I love working with people who wrestle with identity in whatever way that shows up, exploring the meaning of belonging, and of home. With a background in Acting and Creative Writing, I have always been deeply curious about the human experience. Through facing my own challenges in life, I came to appreciate and love the process of working therapeutically and creatively to better understand and accept myself, to find more meaning and joy in my life. It is my honor and pleasure to work with others in this way as I continue to grow and learn along the way. The road to self-knowledge and satisfaction is long and winding, as well as rich and rewarding. I continue to explore new modalities and to add to my skill set as a clinician. But ultimately I see each patient as a their own best expert, and I see myself as a collaborator and companion on their path to greater freedom and agency. I am a mother and a stepmother, among other identities, and these roles greatly affect my view of the world and of the work I do. I see motherhood as an initiation into a deeper understanding of the self and the collective, and I love working with mothers and parents.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I hold space for individual adults and couples. From depression and anxiety, to life transitions, addiction, identity and relationship problems, I start wherever the client is and work collaboratively towards understanding. Whatever the obstacles between a client and their sense of meaning, purpose, authenticity or alignment, I help them move towards growth and change. I bring awareness and sensitivity to systemic oppression and intergenerational trauma that affect us all in different ways, and I respect the inherent wisdom of my clients' psyches to strive towards wholeness. I offer an eclectic psychodynamic approach to psychotherapy. Using the here and now of the therapeutic relationship, I help clients uncover and understand patterns of thinking and behavior that inhibit or prevent them from connection and satisfaction. With experience in somatic and 12-step practices, I bring a holistic perspective to problems and solutions. Beginning therapy, or starting over with a new therapist can be daunting, and it is important to find someone you feel comfortable with. I offer a warm, curious, and empathic space in which to explore your experiences and feelings so that together we may uncover the roots of your struggles and make room for meaningful change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start with the here and now, delving into whatever the client is feeling in the present moment. Allowing the conscious mind to soften and the unconscious to speak in free associations, meandering thoughts, and dreams, allows us to explore the rich layers of personal experience--emotionally, cognitively, and somatically. It is my job to hold the threads, to help flag patterns and explore potential hidden wishes and fears. With unconditional positive regard and deep respect for the vulnerability of the process, we explore the mysterious reaches of your experience and imagine new ways of being. Sometimes therapy can be more practical--I can offer a framework, a challenge to an existing thought pattern of belief system, a new vantage point. At times traumatic memories are best handled with EMDR, or other trauma-informed modalities. Either way, it is always up to the patient, nothing is ever forced. I use humor in my work when appropriate, and I while I do not share unnecessarily about my life, I am not a strict blank slate. The therapeutic relationship is built on trust and consistent, clear boundaries. But it is also important that my patients feel that they are sitting across from a human being, and I work hard to carefully tread that line. I do not take insurance but I can offer super bills which some insurance companies will reimburse for. I believe that therapy should be accessible to everyone, and I offer a limited number of needs-based sliding scale spots in my practice. I meet with clients at least once a week. I believe it is difficult to gain momentum at a less frequent pace.
