Psychotherapist
NY
Haoyue Yu is a bilingual mental health counselor who provides therapy in English and Mandarin Chinese. She works with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship concerns, burnout, life transitions, identity exploration, and cross-cultural adjustment. Haoyue’s style is warm, validating, supportive, and deeply exploratory. She helps clients slow down, feel understood, and better understand their emotions, patterns, protective responses, and inner experiences so that meaningful change can begin from a place of awareness and self-compassion. Haoyue draws from psychodynamic therapy, IFS-informed care, feminist therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, CBT, ACT, and trauma-informed care. Her work is especially attuned to how past experiences, family dynamics, relationships, identity, culture, gender, and social context shape the way clients relate to themselves and others. She supports clients in building emotional clarity, self-awareness, self-compassion, and a stronger sense of choice. Haoyue believes therapy can be a space to slow down, feel deeply understood, and begin naming what has felt confusing or difficult to carry alone. She also values the mind-body connection, helping clients notice how emotions and stress may show up through physical sensations, patterns, and protective responses. Through curiosity and compassion, she helps clients reconnect with themselves and move toward meaningful change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

strive to create a therapy space where you can slow down, feel genuinely heard, and explore what's been difficult to carry on your own. My style is warm, collaborative, and deeply curious. Rather than rushing to solve problems, we'll work together to understand your emotions, patterns, and protective responses with compassion, helping you build greater self-awareness and move toward meaningful, lasting change. I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship concerns, burnout, life transitions, identity exploration, and cross-cultural experiences. I provide therapy in both English and Mandarin Chinese and tailor our work to your unique experiences, values, and goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy is a collaborative process, and we'll move at a pace that feels right for you. In our first few sessions, we'll get to know each other, explore what brings you to therapy, and develop a shared understanding of your goals, strengths, and the challenges you're facing. From there, we'll work together to better understand your emotions, patterns, relationships, and the experiences that have shaped you. Depending on your needs, our work may include exploring past experiences, noticing how emotions and stress show up in the body, developing practical coping strategies, and strengthening self-awareness and self-compassion. I draw from psychodynamic therapy, IFS-informed care, CBT, ACT, mindfulness, feminist therapy, and trauma-informed approaches, tailoring therapy to fit your unique needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. Throughout the process, I aim to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can feel safe to be yourself, ask difficult questions, and work toward changes that feel meaningful and sustainable.
