Harley Wright, LMSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I work with people who feel overwhelmed by reactions they understand logically but still experience physically. Anxiety, trauma, relationship stress, ADHD, grief, and chronic stress can show up in the body as tension, restlessness, shutdown, racing thoughts, irritability, or feeling constantly on alert. My approach focuses on helping clients understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, physical responses, past experiences, and current relationship patterns. We look at what is happening, what keeps repeating, and what may help create a different response. I use a trauma-informed, relational, and practical approach that may include somatic awareness, CBT, DBT-informed strategies, mindfulness, attachment and family systems concepts, motivational interviewing, and psychoeducation. I believe insight is important, but therapy also needs to be useful. My goal is to help clients better understand themselves while also developing concrete ways to manage stress, communicate more effectively, set boundaries, and respond differently to situations that have historically felt overwhelming.

Getting to know Harley Wright

What should a new client know about working with you?

I tend to be very engaged in session. I listen for patterns, help connect what is happening now with what may be underneath it, and pay attention to both emotional and physical responses. I often help clients slow down situations that feel confusing or overwhelming so we can look at what happened, what they noticed in their body, what thoughts or beliefs came up, and what they felt pulled to do next. From there, we work on understanding the pattern and identifying a more effective response. I also provide psychoeducation when it is helpful, teach practical coping and regulation skills, support boundary-setting and communication, and help clients make sense of relationship dynamics, stress responses, and recurring triggers. My goal is not just for clients to talk about what is happening, but to leave with a clearer understanding of themselves and something useful to take into daily life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session is conversational, structured around what feels most important that day, and guided by the goals we have identified together. I usually begin by checking in on what has changed since the last session and whether there are any situations, reactions, or patterns that feel important to look at more closely. From there, we may slow down a recent experience and look at the thoughts, emotions, body sensations, relationship dynamics, or triggers connected to it. I often help clients notice patterns, make connections between current reactions and past experiences, and understand why certain responses keep showing up. Depending on the client and the situation, sessions may also include psychoeducation, grounding or regulation strategies, communication and boundary work, problem-solving, or practicing a different way of responding. I want therapy to feel useful, so I try to make sure clients leave with a clearer understanding of what is happening and something practical they can carry into the week.
