Getting to know Heather Gonyea-Evans

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works with adults and couples seeking support for anxiety, relationship challenges, emotional overwhelm, and life transitions. I provide a calm, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where clients can explore concerns openly and work toward meaningful change. In individual therapy, I help adults better understand patterns of anxiety, stress, and emotional reactivity that may be interfering with daily life, relationships, or personal growth. Many clients come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward. Together, we focus on building insight, strengthening coping skills, and developing healthier ways of managing emotions and stress. In couples therapy, I support partners experiencing communication difficulties, conflict, emotional disconnection, or challenges navigating change. Sessions focus on improving communication, increasing emotional safety, understanding relationship patterns, and developing practical tools for healthier connection and repair. Therapy is collaborative and paced to meet each couple where they are, with an emphasis on respect, clarity, and shared goals. My approach is trauma-informed and grounded in evidence-based practices. I work collaboratively with clients to identify goals, track progress, and adjust treatment as needed. I believe therapy is most effective when clients feel heard, supported, and actively involved in the process. Clients can expect a professional, compassionate space that emphasizes understanding, growth, and practical strategies that can be applied outside of sessions. Whether working individually or as a couple, my goal is to support clients in developing greater self-awareness, emotional balance, and more fulfilling relationships.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients can expect a supportive, collaborative, and non-judgmental approach to therapy. I believe that therapy works best when clients feel safe, respected, and actively involved in the process. Sessions are structured yet flexible, allowing space to explore concerns while also focusing on practical strategies for change. My style is calm, compassionate, and direct when helpful. I take time to understand each client’s experiences, goals, and strengths, and I work at a pace that feels manageable. Therapy is not about being “fixed,” but about building insight, emotional awareness, and effective coping tools that can be used outside of sessions. I use a trauma-informed, evidence-based approach, drawing from cognitive-behavioral strategies and skills focused on emotional regulation, communication, and stress management. With couples, sessions focus on improving communication, increasing emotional safety, and understanding relationship patterns so partners can move toward healthier connection and repair. Clients often describe therapy as a space where they feel heard, grounded, and supported while also being gently challenged to grow. My goal is to help clients gain clarity, reduce emotional distress, and feel more confident navigating life and relationships.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The therapeutic process begins with an initial session focused on understanding what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, and your goals for treatment. We’ll discuss relevant background information, explore how symptoms are affecting daily life or relationships, and identify what you hope to gain from therapy. This first session also helps establish a sense of comfort, collaboration, and direction. Ongoing sessions are structured yet flexible and tailored to each client’s needs. Sessions typically involve a combination of discussion, reflection, and practical skill-building. Together, we explore thought patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors that may be contributing to distress, while also identifying strengths and existing coping strategies. For individual therapy, sessions often focus on anxiety management, emotional regulation, self-awareness, and developing tools to navigate stress and life transitions more effectively. For couples therapy, sessions emphasize communication, emotional safety, understanding relationship patterns, and developing strategies for connection and repair. Throughout treatment, we work collaboratively to set goals, monitor progress, and adjust the focus of therapy as needed. Clients are encouraged to apply insights and skills between sessions to support continued growth. The overall process is paced to feel manageable, supportive, and purposeful, with an emphasis on creating meaningful and lasting change.
