“From the very first session, I felt a genuine sense of comfort. This is only my second appointment, but it already feels like a safe space. He is incredibly down-to-earth, respectful, and truly present. What stands out the most is how attentively he listens — even in the middle of speaking, he’ll pause just to fully hear me out. That level of attention is rare, and it makes all the difference. I leave each session feeling heard, supported, and encouraged. Looking forward to continuing this journey.”

Getting to know Hector Ruiz

My experience spans various settings, allowing me to work collaboratively with individuals facing societal barriers due to prejudicial injustices, stigmatization, and misfortune. Conversely, I also work closely with individuals who have made great professional achievements and contributions but conceal their internal insecurities, psychiatric needs, and familial challenges for fear of being ostracized by loved ones and society. I am a highly empathetic, seasoned, strength-based, solutions-oriented licensed mental health social worker dedicated to empowering individuals, families, and communities to achieve personal and professional goals. I have successfully worked with diverse populations in both one-on-one and group settings, including the child welfare system, private organizations, community-based organizations, the homeless population, and the criminal justice system. I have encountered individuals in crisis situations involving domestic violence, mental health decompensation, polysubstance abuse, co-occurring mental health and/or substance abuse diagnoses, suicidal and homicidal ideations, and addressed school misconduct that fails to protect our children. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, which has further equipped me to provide compassionate and effective care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My versatility is a product of my innate capability to establish rapport quickly, build trust, interact with individuals on all levels, and treat them as equals. This adaptability, honed through theoretical knowledge, proper supervision, and personal challenges, is an asset in any treatment setting. It's a testament to my resilience and commitment to continuous growth, which I believe will greatly benefit you as you begin your journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I consistently offer reassurance, knowledge, and guidance, to individuals advocating, and identifying their needs to navigate complex systems in our society. These are key strengths that social workers bring to our role that are not necessarily practiced in other mental health roles. We do not look at just mental health components, we look at external factors causing distress at home, employment challenges, and interpersonal relationships. My innate skills have been nurtured and enhanced through my personal and professional experiences. I am walking this journey with you, not as your therapist, an observer, companion, and when you are ready a collaborator. Please understand you are the author of your life and will be open to constructive criticism, guidance, and knowledge from you. My methods are eclectic and unconventional, which can be refreshing form your previous experiences and can be intimidating, but we will do this together.

I was frustrated with how many timed I received the same requests for information. Zocdoc and the provider needs to have a unified system for gathering information.
