Helen has more than 20 years of experience helping people work to achieve their goals. She received her BSW and MSW from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She has training in chemical dependency and family systems, and at one time was a Certified Drug Abuse Counselor. In addition, she also trained at the Anger Institute with Mitch Messer, MA, LPC, who was an Adlerian trained psychotherapist. She studied Systematic Training for Effective Parenting, a positive and evidence-based approach to parenting. Helen has experience treating panic disorder, anxiety issues, and depression. Helen continues to work in other areas related to difficult life transitions like aging, changing roles, loss, and grief. Helen has experience working with people across the lifespan and has a particular interest in early childhood and adults. She uses a humanistic insight-based approach that provides support and encouragement needed to bring about lasting change. “I believe we are all doing our best. Sometimes when our usual coping skills no longer work, it’s time to find and practice new ones. By creating a safe environment, I help people to focus on what is important to them and help them achieve it. With insight, understanding and encouragement, I work to help guide people in resolving issues and moving forward. My interactive style is conversational and respectful, plus it incorporates the values of unconditional positive regard and self-determination.”
