Holly Young, LCMHC

Psychotherapist
NC
I’m Holly Young, LCMHC—a therapist based in Asheville, NC. My practice is rooted in creating safe, affirming spaces for adults navigating stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma, neurodivergence, and LGBTQ+ issues. I believe therapy should be as approachable as it is meaningful, and I strive to offer care that is person-centered, collaborative, and deeply compassionate. My approach draws from Humanistic, Strength Based, Trauma Informed, Mindfulness, and Psychoeducation modalities, tailored to each client’s unique needs and interests. With a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from UNCA and an MA in Counseling from Wake Forest, I am currently pursuing an MA in Human Rights and Social Justice from ASU. My background includes working in schools, supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, intensive in-home services, walk-in assessments, forensic evaluations, community mental health, and now private practice teletherapy. These experiences allow me to meet clients where they are and adapt my care to a wide range of life experiences and identities. At the core of my work are values of doing no harm, promoting wellness, empowerment, education, and advocacy. I believe in not staying neutral during times of societal strife, and I am passionate about human rights, social justice, reparations, trauma healing, and fighting against systemic oppression. I strive to be a stable presence for my clients, honoring the belief that “shame dies when stories are told in safe spaces.” My goal is to help you feel seen, supported, and empowered throughout your therapy journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you work with me, you’ll find a therapist who is authentic, approachable, and committed to creating a judgment-free space. I understand that starting therapy can be daunting, especially if you’ve felt unseen or misunderstood in the past. I work best with adults experiencing stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma, neurodivergence, and LGBTQ+ issues, and I welcome all identities and backgrounds. My approach is person-centered and collaborative—meaning we’ll work together to set goals, explore challenges, and build skills that feel relevant and meaningful to you. I tailor my methods to your needs, drawing from a flexible range of modalities. I value honesty, empathy, and curiosity, and I’m committed to meeting you wherever you are in your journey. I strive to be a stable presence in your life, especially during times of darkness or uncertainty. I believe in the healing power of sharing stories and building connection, and I work to interrupt loneliness and isolation in the therapy space. My core values include fairness, equality, independence, assertiveness, curiosity, and kindness. You can expect me to show up authentically, honor your lived experience, and support your growth in a way that feels safe and empowering.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with building a foundation of safety and trust. In our first sessions, I’ll invite you to share your story at your own pace, completing an intake and symptoms assessments, exploring what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain. We’ll collaborate to identify your goals and tailor our work to your interests and needs, whether that involves skill-building, processing trauma, or exploring identity. I use a flexible, person-centered approach, drawing from Humanistic, Strength Based, Trauma Informed, Mindfulness, and Psychoeducation modalities. I integrate these theories as needed, ensuring that therapy remains relevant and supportive for you. Sessions are collaborative, fun and down-to-earth, and I encourage open communication about what is or isn’t working. Throughout our work together, I prioritize honesty, empathy, and curiosity. I strive to create a judgment-free space for sharing, growth, and connection. I check in regularly about your progress and adjust our approach as needed. My goal is to empower you, interrupt loneliness, and help you find glimmers of hope and meaning in everyday life. I believe that healing happens in safe spaces, and I am committed to being a steady, supportive presence for you as you navigate your journey.
