“I have been seeing Irene for several months during a difficult season in my life. She is very empathetic, honest, and consistent. When we talk, I believe and know she really listens and HEARS what I am saying in a non-judgemental manner. She is open to working together on whatever is important to me, including what I feel works and does not work in the therapy space. I look forward to speaking with her weekly knowing I am meeting with someone who is clinically sound and supportive. This is what therapy should be.”

Getting to know Irene Zelterman

Therapy infuses us with hope, teaches us self-care, and fosters resilience. I specialize in working with trauma survivors. Eating and mood disorders are areas I work with as well. I have extensive experience working with adult children who are caring for their aging parents and parents raising children with learning, emotional, or developmental challenges. I provide both long- and short-term therapy. My approach to treatment is based in psychodynamic theory. In a nutshell, this means that experiences from your childhood shape who you are today. Coping skills you used as a child often carry over into adulthood. These coping skills can become patterns that may no longer serve you as an adult. My work is infused with techniques from Internal Family Systems and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I work collaboratively with you. I often tell my clients, ?You are driving the bus, and I am helping read the map.? Therapy is a process, a journey, a vehicle for change. You come to therapy when you want things to be different in your life. Usually, therapy is sought when there has been a change or disruption in your life. This change or disruption sometimes highlights things you are unhappy with. Since you are thinking about therapy, there are likely things in your life you want to change. Perhaps you are aware of patterns that are preventing you from being the person you want to be or living the life you want. Everyone is scared in the beginning-that is natural. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York. Within 24 hours of booking an appointment, we need to have phone contact before the appointment can be confirmed. Until we speak, take care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am Level 2 Internal Family Systems trained. I see individuals. I provide teletherapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We meet for one hour. During our time together I help you to identify how you feel.(your parts) . We work to heal wounds you have experienced which will help you to become your authentic self.

I have had only positive experiences with Irene. She is a very considerate, patient, understanding and non-judgemental therapist. I appreciate her flexible scheduling and look forward to our weekly meetings.
After 10 years of on and off therapy in NYC, I can honestly say this is by far the best therapist I have ever worked with / experience I have ever had. Irene understands how to create a safe space for patients and let the patients themselves guide her so that there is trust and a sense of equality built. Highly recommend.
Irene spent time getting to know me and my concerns. She listened and was very helpful outlining ways (identifying) and helping me move forward.
At first I was a bit nervous, but Irene quickly and calmly reduced that fear. She seemed very knowledgeable and experienced about what I was going through.
