Getting to know Isabel Villegas

I’m Isabel M. Villegas, LCSW (NY), a bilingual (Spanish-English) clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience supporting children, adolescents, adults, and families across child welfare, community mental health, education, and telehealth. I provide therapy for concerns such as anxiety, trauma, depression, relationship stress, work-related stress, and life transitions. My approach is strengths-based, collaborative, and trauma-informed. I help clients understand patterns, build emotional resilience, and develop practical tools that support lasting change. Depending on your needs, I may integrate approaches such as Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Narrative Therapy, mindfulness/meditation, and breathwork. I also bring a strong foundation in systems work and family-focused care, drawing from Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) and Structural Family Therapy (SFT) when appropriate. My goal is to create a space where you feel respected, understood, and empowered—so therapy becomes a place for healing, growth, and meaningful progress.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients often tell me they feel comfortable quickly in our work together. My personal strength is connecting authentically—helping people feel seen, valued, and understood. Professionally, I bring strong clinical insight from decades of experience working with individuals, children, and families in complex systems. I’m direct when helpful, always compassionate, and consistently collaborative. You can expect therapy that balances support and practical strategy. We’ll talk about what’s happening now, identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and build tools you can use between sessions. I will meet you where you are, honor your culture and values, and move at a pace that feels emotionally safe. Whether you’re managing anxiety, healing from trauma, navigating family stress, or feeling overwhelmed by work and life demands, we’ll work together toward clearer coping, healthier relationships, and greater confidence.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start with an initial session focused on understanding your concerns, strengths, history, and goals. I’ll ask questions to clarify symptoms and stressors, and together we’ll create a treatment plan that fits your needs—whether you’re looking for symptom relief, deeper healing, or improved relationships. In ongoing sessions, we typically: check in on symptoms, stressors, and progress. identify patterns (thoughts, emotions, relationships, family dynamics). learn and practice coping skills (mindfulness, grounding, breathwork). use evidence-based approaches tailored to your goals (TF-CBT, IPT, IFS, Narrative). track progress and adjust goals as life changes. For teens/families, sessions may include caregiver involvement when appropriate and focus on communication, attachment needs, and structure/support at home. My goal is for therapy to feel clear, focused, and supportive—so you leave with insight and tools you can apply in daily life.
