Why is it that when we struggle with our thoughts, feelings and emotions, we often feel stuck repeating the same patterns of behaviors and continue to struggle despite our best efforts to fix the problem? Or we may find some relief, but ends up making the situation worse or is just a temporary fix at best. My name is James and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) living in Kake, "Keex' Kwan", Alaska, a rural Tlingit Alaska Native village nestled among the Tongass rainforest. I serve as a part-time school counselor while also running Arcturus Counseling as a private practice. My best work is with clients who are seeking to reconnect with their more authentic selves. I believe most if not all of us who struggle with anxiety, depression or other mental, emotional and psychological problems have within them the skills, tools and resources to recover through a holistic, value-based and wellness focused approach. Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) is the primary therapy model i engage in with my clients. Finding a new way of relating to yourself and your problems using ACT skills, exercises and interventions will allow you to create some distance from your thoughts and feelings and will allow you a bit more flexibility to manage distress and open up to value-driven actions and solutions. Being more present allows us to be more accepting of ourselves, others, our circumstances and surroundings. It also allows us to experience a stronger sense of empathy and self-compassion. I also understand the role that trauma plays in our lives and I take a trauma informed and engaged approach to everything I do. For that reason, I incorporate Internal Family Systems (IFS) into my practice which has great potential to heal the parts of us that continue to carry the burdens and wounds of trauma. Between work and sleep, I enjoy running, hiking, boating, telemark skiing, sailing, surf travel, dogs, hanging out with family and my newly acquired taste for Rooibos Tea.
