Getting to know James McLaughlin

Hi! I'm James McLaughlin, a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist located in Sacramento. I work with individuals, couples, and families seeking support to navigate life’s challenges. I focus on uncovering what may be blocking your fulfillment and work actively and collaboratively to help you re-write your life story. I’m warm and welcoming, believing everyone deserves compassion and a helping hand. I can also be direct and challenging when needed. My goal is to create an environment that encourages growth and change. After a career in sales and marketing, I pursued a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific University and became licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist. Since then, I’ve helped people cope with trauma, addiction, grief, depression, and anxiety. My specialty is empowering clients to take control of their life narratives and write the future they want to live. In my spare time, you’ll usually find me running, wine tasting with my wife Sarah, or playing with our dog Noah.

What should a new client know about working with you?

James is amazing. I look forward to every appointment and always leave our sessions with newfound clarity or insight. Incredibly grateful I have this opportunity to work with him.
My son has given me positive feedback after every session and I can see the how he is better able to navigate teenage challenges in a more positive way with what he is learning with his therapist.
James has been calm with me and Dylan. He listens well, and provides an alternate perspective to help see the situation in a different light-reframing it. That has been very helpful for me.
I was going through a hard time and felt very comfortable explaining my thoughts and feelings. I began to build courage and confidence agian after my sessions with James!
