James Roberts, LCSW, MSW

Psychotherapist
FL
I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing individual therapy via secure telehealth to adults throughout Florida. Many people reach out during a difficult season, and you don't need to have everything figured out before getting started. I have four years of professional experience across outpatient, community mental health, hospital, disability services, and telehealth settings. My clinical work includes anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, OCD and intrusive thoughts, ADHD, bipolar disorder, psychosis and serious mental illness, and substance use and co-occurring disorders. I also support older adults navigating late-life transitions, as well as clients coping with grief, chronic stress, self-esteem concerns, and major life changes. As a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy, I bring a personal understanding of health, accessibility, and the systems people must navigate to receive care. I have particular experience working with individuals living with disability or chronic illness, neurodivergent adults, and LGBTQ+ clients, and I provide affirming care. My approach is collaborative, transparent, and practical. Treatment focuses on understanding the patterns behind your concerns and developing skills you can apply in daily life. I integrate evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and trauma-informed care, incorporating ERP-informed and mindfulness-based strategies when clinically appropriate.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to have everything figured out before your first appointment. It can help to consider what you would like to be different, and we will begin with what feels most important to you. Therapy is collaborative and nonjudgmental. I explain the reasoning behind our work, invite your feedback, and regularly review whether treatment is meeting your goals. Sessions combine supportive conversation with practical, evidence-based tools, balancing structure with flexibility. All sessions are conducted by live video. Clients must be physically located in Florida at the time of each session and should have a device with a camera, a reliable internet connection, and a private space. Appointments are available on weekdays, with daytime and limited evening availability. I provide individual therapy for adults ages 18 and older, including older adults. I do not prescribe medication but am glad to coordinate care with your prescribing provider.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Initial assessment: The first session is an intake focused on your current concerns, relevant history, and goals for therapy. We conclude by identifying initial priorities and discussing whether my approach is a good fit for your needs. Early sessions: We work to understand the concerns that brought you to therapy and the patterns that maintain them. History is explored when it helps clarify current difficulties, while the primary focus remains on present functioning and your goals. Ongoing treatment: Sessions combine discussion with skill development drawn from CBT, DBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy, with ERP-informed and mindfulness-based strategies as clinically appropriate. Between-session practice is recommended when it serves a clear purpose. Progress review: We regularly review progress and adjust the treatment plan collaboratively. If progress stalls, we revisit goals and strategies together. If another provider or level of care would better meet your needs, I will discuss this with you and assist with referrals when possible. Session length and frequency are determined collaboratively and adjusted as your needs change.
