James Walch, LICSW

Psychotherapist
MN
Hi there, I'm James! My name is James Walch, and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW). I earned my Master's in Social Work from Augsburg University. I believe my job as a clinician is to walk a half step behind you and let you show me your garden. We are a team, and together we will decide what direction to go. My approach I believe that many of the things we believe about ourselves are rooted in attachment and the family system we grew up in. I'm a believer in family structural therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and attachment theory. My focus In the last four years, I have mostly worked with people with significant mood disorders and substance use issues. I continue to work with people with mood disorders and have begun to include spiritual work and mindfulness in my practice. My communication style I try to be a gentle and kind guide. I spent a few years as a wilderness guide and always use that experience to inform my work. I want my clients to feel safe and secure and to know they can trust me. My journey to mental healthcare Initially, as a social worker, my aim was to be useful. I still want to be useful, and my spiritual practice, clinical, and life experiences enable me to continue to be useful to people. My goals for you I want my clients to state their goals. I also want to work with them to develop goals that decrease their symptoms and help improve their ability to function in their lives. My first session with you I always start with informed consent. I discuss mandated reporting and what confidentiality means with a clinician. I spend a little time talking about myself, then I try to get a good history of the client and what they are looking for.
