“Dr. Hecht helped me work through the most challenging period of my life. He guided me to learn more about myself and how I process and understand my own emotions. I can now proudly say that I am a confident, self-aware, and emotionally grounded individual as a result of working with him. Before seeing him I didn’t really believe in therapy. I’m so glad I did it despite my skepticism, because the value provided to me has positively impacted my life. ”

Getting to know Dr. Jamey Hecht

Jamey Hecht is a Brooklyn, NY-based Marriage and Family Therapist and Psychoanalyst, licensed in New York (license number 001694), New Jersey, California, and Texas. He earned his PsyD from the New Center for Psychoanalysis and holds a Master's in Psychology from Antioch University - Los Angeles. We all need to develop our capacity to love and to work; to discover our emotional, social, and creative needs; and to find ethical and effective ways of getting those needs met. Therapy can help you clear away the fog of old pain and unconscious conflicts that block your growth. I listen with empathy and respect and offer fresh perspective. I'm a pretty active therapist, not a silent and passive one. I wade into the waters with you, finding the firm places where we think together about how best to equip your most adult self while soothing and healing what hurts. My main areas of work are depression, anxiety, men's issues, creativity, life transitions (like turning 30 or 50), and relationships. I enjoy working with clients of all genders, orientations, and ancestries, taking an active interest in each client's expression of their own experience. My website includes a blog about issues people bring to therapy that provides encouragement and useful reflections on love, work, aging, commitment, addiction, forgiveness, grief, gender, ambition, and more.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is psychodynamic, which means I see you as a unique human being, with an individual history that shapes your present experience. As a psychoanalyst, I pay attention to the unconscious, where different parts-of-self sometimes pursue conflicting agendas that need to be sorted out with insight and compassion. Some of what I do is CBT, reframing negative beliefs in more adaptive ways. A coaching piece is usually in the mix, where we think together about the options and opportunities your situation includes, and consider the possibilities. As we bring your wishes and plans into sharper focus, you can more effectively steer your life in the direction where you want it to go. I often help people to become less impulsive and more thoughtful, while supporting their ability to make choices and take action. Building healthy boundaries with your family, friends, and colleagues can free up energy that used to be consumed in worry or conflict, making it available for exploring the world.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so you can see if we're a good fit. At our first session, I'll ask what brings you to therapy that you'd like to work on. We'll discuss it for a while, then shift to some questions that can help you teach me about your history, and about where you now find yourself in life. Pretty soon, I'll share my first impression and check-in with you about how it tracks, and what comes up for you as you hear it. Based on your words, as well as the feelings expressed by your manner of presence, I'll collaborate with you in formulating a few aspects of what it is we will be trying to accomplish together, modifying it as we go. Most people treat themselves with plenty of judgmental scorn. It might seem risky to be kinder to yourself, but it turns out kindness gets better results than tyranny. Often therapy involves growing a new relationship to yourself that is firm-but-gentle, like the perfect handshake. Important memories and formative experiences come up, along with very recent events and issues. A few main themes usually emerge and become better understood. Insight has its place, but the main thing that heals and promotes growth is the experience of a reliable, wholesome, consistent therapeutic relationship.
