Jamie Dunlap, LCPC

Psychotherapist
IL
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 10 years in the psychology field. My career has spanned community mental health, academia, and private practice, with roles including psychotherapist, clinical research associate, assistant practice manager, and owner of a Chicago-based telehealth private practice. I specialize in adults, individuals and couples. I completed a year-long couples therapy training with The Couples Institute, which is rooted in understanding attachment, letting go of control, and building an acceptance, tolerance, and even celebration of our differences in relationships. I regularly work with anxiety and mood disorders, relational distress, family trauma, life transitions, pregnancy and postpartum adjustment, mixed-cultural relationships, and sexual wellbeing. I also have specialized training in infertility and IVF psychosocial evaluations, and a keen interest in supporting women ages 25–50 navigating identity development, societal pressures, and role balance.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is grounded in an attachment theory and developmental framework. I follow what is called a relational approach through supporting clients to increase emotional awareness, understand and validating your needs, holding patience with ineffective coping strategies, and developing more secure ways of relating to yourself and other. Although my heart is this relational psychotherapy, I also have a strong “toolbelt” of CBT, somatic, and psychoeducation tools to best fit your need.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typical sessions will begin with a check-in and what feels most relevant to you that day. If needed, we can focus on more immediate matters. I am mindful to check-in on long-term goals and how these day-to-day challenges are connected. We will "pull the thread" through feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and find what is most helpful to you in improving circumstances. That may be challenging thought patterns and how you see the situation, having more empathy for yourself or others, taking behavioral action, or accepting what is. It may be a combination of all! Working with me will be interactive, investigative, and transparent. We will always have a direction in mind. My hope is for you to never feel stuck in suffering or alone on your journey.
