Getting to know Jamie Smith

I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Illinois. I believe that during therapy, you should be in the driver’s seat. I may be an expert in mental health, but you are the expert on you. Struggling with fatigue, hopelessness, worthlessness, or constant worry can be debilitating. Our focus will be entirely on the goals that you want to achieve for yourself, not what the outside world says should be your goals. I’m perfectly comfortable meeting you right where you are. My goal is for you to leave my office not feeling like a “sick” person, but like the unique individual you are. When my clients get better, I see them connecting with the world in whatever way that means for them. Some pick up old hobbies they haven’t enjoyed in years, get that job they’ve always wanted, or connect with the friends or partners they have been looking for. I have seen people rediscover themselves after loss or trauma. I have a history of working with different groups of people that other therapists don’t specialize in or will outright refuse to see. So, no one coming to my office has to be afraid that anything about them or their lives will be a barrier to therapy here. I am passionate about supporting the underdog, the outsider. I have great faith in what people can do. I like to see that spark of belief people have in themselves and help it grow even when the outside world doesn’t believe it yet. It is a very special moment when I can share with a client the knowledge that we both know something better is in store for them. If they don’t know it yet, they can borrow some of my belief until theirs kicks in. To get started, just click the contact me button to schedule an appointment right from the website. If you aren’t ready to jump into therapy, I understand. You can schedule a free 15-minute consultation the same way. I really look forward to working with you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Sessions are informal and unstructured. This is not cookie cutter therapy. Your first appointment will be an opportunity to talk about what has been going on and what brings you to therapy. Every time you return after that, you can talk about whatever want. There is no wrong way to do therapy. Just come in, be yourself and let’s get going!
