Jamila Lyons is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Jamila has experience working with children from preschool to middle age as a substitute teacher at Jewish Day school in the Hyde Park community. She also was the on-sight aquatics director for the Jewish Community Center's Hyde Park location, creating and implementing swim programs while specializing in working one on one with children and adolescents on the spectrum. Currently, she works with high school age students as swim coach in Chicago Public Schools. Jamila utilizes various therapeutic approaches, including client-centered, cognitive behavioral therapy, and solution-focused therapy approaches when working with her clients and students in both traditional and non-traditional settings. Jamila earned her BA in psychology from Hampton University and obtained her master's degree in community counseling at Argosy University-Chicago. She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in clinical psychology with an emphasis on children and adolescents at Adler School of Professional Psychology. For clinical rotations, Jamila currently is a therapy extern at the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School. There, she focuses on providing therapy and case management for high school students and young adults in the transitional living program. Jamila specializes in working with children, adolescents, families, and young adults and minorities both inside and outside the school environment. As a therapist, Jamila's overall goal is to encourage mental health support and reduce mental health stigma among young people and minorities. She strives to create an environment that is nonjudgmental, warm and welcoming for the clients she serves to promote a safe space for healing. She encourages open communication regarding the process of therapy so clients can best overcome their obstacles and live a more meaningful life.
