I know I'm most helpful to my clients when I'm 100% present with you. I see your face; I hear your voice; I empathize with you. I check in to make sure I'm on the right track, and I trust you to correct me if I'm not. I want to understand exactly how you feel, and why. I jot notes-you're welcome to see them. I think about you between sessions. This is a client-centered approach to psychotherapy. This is what works for me, and my clients have told me it works for them. You might not feel like talking; maybe you'll prefer to paint or pound clay. If you think that may happen, please have your crayons, paintbrush, sketch pad, or play-doh-whatever you know you might like-to keep your hands busy, to take time to think or not think, maybe to express yourself. If there are two of you, a couple or friends, I give you each a chance to share your truth. If there's conflict, we go back to the beginning, both of us listening with the same presence for that third person's truth. Then you trade roles, listening and checking in to make sure you “got it” and can show your comprehension using your words. Psychotherapy is a process. Like taking a trip with an old map. Or a new map. Or maybe we make the map as we go along. Sometimes you know where you want to go; sometimes you have no idea; you just know it's time to take that trip. Alone or together. You might want to take your whole family. As long as they all agree, we will get a vehicle large enough for all of us to explore the road, even if there are potholes along the way. I hold a Master's in Counseling from Saint Mary's College of California, which has shaped my approach and deepened my commitment to this work. I look forward to meeting my clients. Each of you will bring your stories. You will open up new worlds for me.
