Janet Potter, LMFT

Psychotherapist
NH
Hi there, I'm Janet! I am a mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapist with over twenty years in practice. I approach therapy in a brief, solution focused manner--if we are not making some progress in a couple sessions, perhaps we are not a great fit and that is OK. I am direct, honest and provide some humor. My focus My client focus is varied. I enjoy a challenge and I appreciate diversity in my practice. That being said, I do have a significant amount of experience in treating dual diagnosis individuals (substance use and mental health) and trauma. I practice meeting folks where they are at as the first step to any successful transformational process. My approach I focus the work of therapy on the treatment plan (your goals), and actively involve the client in that process. Every session you can expect to start off with a quick recap from the last session, and a follow up on any assigned tasks, and then prompting to figure out where you want to focus on for that session. My communication style I am very warm, engaging, as well as honest and draw on humor whenever possible. I am direct with clients, as this is critical for growth. My journey to mental healthcare I was on track to be a neurologist (I still love how the brain works!), but then I took my first psychology class and was hooked. I went directly from an undergraduate degree in psychology to a masters program in marriage and family therapy--the interest probably deriving from the dysfunctional family I grew up in. My goals for you I help clients reach their goals by actively involving them in the process and empowering and motivating them to make the changes needed. Our first session The first session the only topics are ¨what are you coming to therapy for (what´s happening)?¨ and ¨what is the history of this problem¨--depending on the individual, sometimes this can be several sessions. Within this time, we are working collaboratively to develop the treatment plan.
