Getting to know Jeannie Copado

I am a wife and mother. I was born in Freehold, NJ, but raised in Houston for most of my life. I've been an athlete since the age of five and have competed and been part of the boxing community for at least twenty years. This is where my interest in helping people began. I graduated from the University of Houston with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. I then pursued my M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Since 2015, I have worked primarily with children, adolescents, and families. My experience includes working with children with learning difficulties, adolescents in the juvenile detention system, substance abuse, behavioral issues, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. I currently work with individuals and couples on a range of issues such as communication problems, conflict management, premarital and marital challenges, infidelity, anxiety, work-life balance, and depression. Growing up, I witnessed how drugs, gang violence, poverty, and low socioeconomic status affect individuals and their families. I also observed how the boxing community was a positive resource for many of these individuals and families; for some, it was the only resource. The best part about being a therapist is being able to participate in the change of others, as boxing was for my community. Through each person's journey, I want to provide additional resources and support to help guide them with their needs. Some qualities that make me a great therapist are adapting to individual needs, being reliable and authentic, and creating a healthy environment.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am delighted to welcome you! As your therapist, my primary goal is to create a safe and nurturing environment where you can openly express your feelings, thoughts, and concerns. My therapeutic approach is rooted in empathy, compassion, and understanding. I believe that every individual is unique, thus, my treatment plans are tailored to meet each person's specific needs and goals. I utilize a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Mindfulness interventions, depending on what best suits your situation. During our first session, we will spend time getting to know each other. You'll have the opportunity to share about yourself, your experiences, and what you hope to achieve through therapy. This is also an excellent time for you to ask any questions or voice any concerns you may have. Our initial meeting will help lay the groundwork for our therapeutic relationship and guide the direction of future sessions. As we progress, we will work together to explore and understand your emotions, behaviors, and thought patterns. Through this process, we aim to uncover any underlying issues, address them, and equip you with the tools and strategies to manage them effectively. In terms of specialization, I have extensive experience working with couples dealing with relationship issues including communication, and individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and life transitions. Please remember that therapy is a journey, often filled with ups and downs. It requires patience, commitment, and courage. But rest assured, I will be there to support you every step of the way. I look forward to embarking on this therapeutic journey with you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our initial session typically begins with conversations to help us settle into the therapeutic space. This could be as simple as discussing how your week has been. It's essential for me to create an atmosphere where you feel safe and comfortable. Therefore, I always emphasize that our conversations are confidential, judgment-free, and centered around your needs and well-being. Once we're ready to delve deeper, we'll start discussing what brought you to therapy. In the context of your particular challenges, this might involve exploring your feelings about your relationship, identifying patterns of behavior, or reflecting on past experiences that may be influencing your current situation. During our discussions, I will guide you with open-ended questions, reflections, and gentle challenges to help you gain insights and work towards solutions. It's a collaborative process, and your active participation is key to its success. As we approach the end of the session, we'll take some time to summarize what we've discussed. This helps to consolidate your insights and ensures we're both clear on the key takeaways. Depending on the session, I might suggest some 'homework' - this could be a reflective exercise, a reading suggestion, or a small action step related to what we've discussed. Therapy is a journey, often with ups and downs, but it offers the potential for significant personal growth and change. As we progress, you can expect to gain a deeper understanding of yourself , your relationships, develop more effective communication skills, and learn strategies to manage challenging emotions or situations. Remember, the work doesn't stop when the session ends. Applying what you've learned in therapy to your everyday life is crucial. I'm here to support you throughout this process, and together, we'll navigate the path towards improved relationship health and personal well-being.
