Getting to know Jennelle Johnson

I am a compassionate mental health therapist with dual master’s degrees in Social Work and Gerontology from the University of Southern California. I specialize in supporting individuals through life transitions, emotional challenges, family dynamics, and the aging process. My experience spans outpatient therapy, hospital-based behavioral health, crisis intervention, hospice, home health, and substance use treatment. This diverse background allows me to meet clients where they are and provide thoughtful, practical support across different stages of life. My approach is collaborative and tailored to each individual, helping clients build resilience, gain insight, and move toward meaningful change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients should know that I value building a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship from the very beginning. I understand that starting therapy can feel vulnerable, and I work to create an environment that is welcoming, nonjudgmental, and respectful of your lived experience. My approach is collaborative and personalized. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all model of therapy. Instead, I take time to understand your goals, challenges, strengths, relationships, and the bigger picture of what is affecting your well-being. Together, we identify what is most important to you and create a plan that feels realistic and meaningful. Clients often describe my style as compassionate, direct, thoughtful, and grounded. I will support you emotionally, but I will also help you build practical tools you can use in everyday life. Depending on your needs, our work may include identifying patterns, improving coping skills, managing stress, processing difficult emotions, strengthening communication, improving family relationships, or supporting recovery and life transitions. I have experience working with diverse populations and understand the importance of culturally responsive care. I welcome clients from different backgrounds and life stages, and I aim to help each person feel seen, understood, and supported.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins with an initial session focused on getting to know you and understanding what’s bringing you to therapy. I’ll ask about your current concerns, personal history, strengths, support system, and what you hope to gain from our work together. From there, we’ll collaborate on goals that feel meaningful and realistic for you. Sessions are tailored to your needs, but often include talking through current challenges, exploring patterns, and building practical skills you can use in your daily life. I draw from approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and family-focused techniques to help you better manage emotions, shift unhelpful thought patterns, and move toward lasting change. I also check in regularly to make sure therapy is meeting your needs and adjust our approach as needed. My goal is for sessions to feel supportive, collaborative, and productive—so you leave with greater clarity, confidence, and tools you can actually use outside of therapy. I believe therapy should be a space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to grow.
