Aloha, I’m Jennifer Cornwell, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), and SAP. I am the founder of Lokahi Counseling Center, where we provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed care for individuals, couples, and families across Hawai?i. My approach to therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in evidence-based practices. I specialize in helping clients navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, and life transitions. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), which are highly effective for processing trauma and building emotional resilience. I work with children, adolescents, adults, and military families, and I understand the unique cultural and lifestyle factors that impact mental health in Hawai?i. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to make meaningful change. At Lokahi Counseling Center, we believe in “lokahi”—balance, harmony, and unity. Therapy is not just about reducing symptoms, but about helping you reconnect with yourself, strengthen your relationships, and move forward with clarity and purpose.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, and it’s important to know that my approach is warm, collaborative, and non-judgmental. My goal is to create a safe space where you feel comfortable being yourself while also gently challenging patterns that may be keeping you stuck. In our work together, I focus on helping you understand the “why” behind your thoughts, emotions, and relationship patterns—not just managing symptoms, but creating meaningful, lasting change. I integrate evidence-based approaches such as EMDR and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), while also tailoring sessions to your unique needs, culture, and life experiences. You can expect our sessions to be structured but flexible. Some sessions may focus on processing past experiences, while others will be more present-focused—building coping skills, improving communication, or navigating current stressors. I will guide you through the process, but therapy is a team effort, and your voice and goals will always be central. I also value honesty and transparency. I will provide direct, supportive feedback and help you track your progress over time. Whether you’re coming in for anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, or personal growth, we will work together at a pace that feels both safe and effective for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together begins with an initial intake session where I take time to understand your concerns, history, and goals for therapy. This includes exploring emotional, relational, and life factors so we can develop a clear and personalized direction for treatment. From there, sessions are tailored to your needs and may include a combination of insight-oriented work and practical skill-building. I use evidence-based approaches such as EMDR and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to help process past experiences, reduce distress, and strengthen coping strategies. A typical session may include checking in on your week, identifying current challenges, and working through patterns or situations that are impacting your well-being. Depending on your goals, we may focus on processing trauma, improving relationships, managing anxiety or depression, or building emotional regulation skills. I work in a structured yet flexible way—balancing deeper therapeutic work with tools you can apply in your daily life. Throughout the process, we will regularly review your progress and adjust our approach to ensure therapy remains effective and aligned with your goals.
