Before the state of Indiana began its attack on gender affirming care, I had the privilege of providing counseling and mental health support for the patients at the first family medical practice in the state that specifically welcomed members of the LGBTQ+ population. I was proud to be a part of creating radical welcome to folx from all walks of life who had not been accepted or celebrated in traditional medical/mental health spaces. My philosophy of care continues to be influenced by the clients who had the courage to open up to me about their lives and experiences. It is a sacred thing, to be trusted with another human’s story. Sadly, that practice was run out of town due to the political climate we find ourselves in. But the work of providing radical welcome and acceptance for folx on the margins is far from done. I see healing as an act of resistance and I am ready to walk alongside of anyone who has the courage to seek self-acceptance and actualization. While the majority of my professional career has been serving members of the queer community, I see intersections of oppressive systems and cultural pressures as they effect every person in unique ways. That is to say, none of us are immune from trauma, loss, socio-cultural pressures, struggles with identity, exploration of spirituality, and our embodied human experience. After double majoring in English and Women’s and Gender Studies, I received my MS in Counseling and Human Services with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling— all at Indiana University South Bend. My partner is ordained in the United Church of Christ and currently pursuing an MS in Counseling. Together we have three offspring, each of whom have developed into unique individuals. I love to garden and eat fresh tomato sandwiches in the summer. I enjoy “grandma” hobbies like canning, quilting, and birdwatching. I prefer vinyl to digital forms of music and I collect typewriters and weird reference books.
