Jennifer McKinzie, LPC

Psychotherapist
MS
Hi there! For over a decade, I've dedicated myself to the enriching and diverse world of mental health. From navigating the intricate networks of community mental health to offering my expertise in inpatient hospital settings, my journey has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. I earned my Master's in Counseling Psychology from The University of West Alabama, which laid a strong foundation for my work. I've always felt a special connection when working with adults and couples, helping them untangle the complexities of their emotions and experiences. But beyond my professional endeavors, my heart beats strongest for FAMILY. As a proud mother to five wonderful children (three darling daughters and two spirited sons), every moment I spend with them reinforces my belief in the importance of relationships, connection, and understanding. They're a constant reminder of why I ventured into this field. My approach to therapy is a tad untraditional. While we'll certainly dive deep, and at times confront uncomfortable truths, I also believe in the healing power of a genuine smile. My quirky personality ensures that there's a light moment to look forward to, even during our most profound sessions. My passion for mental health isn't just about counseling; it's about making a genuine difference. I truly believe that every step forward, no matter how tiny, is a leap toward progress. Watching my clients break barriers, set new benchmarks, and blossom into the best versions of themselves is what fuels my drive. It's more than a job?it's my calling. Helping you rediscover your strength, realize your potential, and achieve those seemingly distant goals is what I'm here for. Looking forward to our journey together!

What should a new client know about working with you?

In the many years of practicing therapy , my main approach with each client is the importance of the therapeutic rapport. The importance of having a upfront dialogue in order to help each client meet their full potential. I strive on helping each client to reach each goal that they set for themselves. I tend to provide each client with what is needed to my best ability.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the intake session I will gather information concerning reason for seeking therapy and symptoms occurring/time of occurrences. I then obtain needed background information such as symptom history, treatment history , medical history, medication history or current, educational background, family background and social background. From that gathered information a tentative diagnosis is given. CBT and talk therapy is practice mostly used. After intake session is completed, each client then will schedule their next session. In those session, I will focus on ways to help each client reduce their occurring symptoms. We will come up with ways/coping skills to help reduce their symptoms.
