Jennifer Sterling, LCAT

Jennifer Sterling, LCAT

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) specializing in Dance/Movement Therapy, EMDR, DBT, CPT, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). I hold a Master's degree in Counseling and Dance Movement Therapy from Sarah Lawrence College. With over a decade of experience, I have helped clients reconnect with their bodies, navigate complex emotions, and recover from trauma, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. My work integrates movement, expressive arts, and somatic practices to support emotional regulation, self-expression, and overall well-being. I understand that traditional talk therapy isn't always enough-especially for those who feel disconnected from their emotions or struggle to verbalize their experiences. That's why I incorporate body-based and creative interventions, helping clients move through what feels stuck while fostering resilience and self-compassion. My background includes working with women, particularly those from marginalized communities. Whether you're looking to break free from limiting narratives, process deep emotional pain, or simply develop a healthier relationship with yourself, my approach is gentle, affirming, and deeply attuned to your unique needs.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe healing should be accessible, affirming, and inclusive. As a Black woman therapist, I recognize the unique burdens and systemic challenges that many of my clients face, and I approach therapy with a liberation-focused lens. I am deeply committed to mental health advocacy, body liberation, and creating spaces where people, especially Black women, can exist without performance or pretense. I support Health at Every Size (HAES), body neutrality, and trauma-informed, culturally competent care. My work is influenced by Liberation Psychology, honoring the historical, social, and generational factors that shape our emotional experiences. Outside of therapy, I am a writer, educator, and creative. I’ve developed resources that help individuals build self-awareness and emotional resilience, and I continuously seek ways to integrate art, movement, and somatic practices into mental health care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me is collaborative, embodied, and tailored to your needs. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, so our work together will blend traditional therapeutic techniques with body-based, creative, and mindfulness practices to help you process emotions in ways that feel natural to you. ? For Talk Therapy Sessions – We may explore your emotions, thoughts, and patterns through a combination of DBT and trauma-informed conversation, helping you develop tools for self-regulation, distress tolerance, and emotional resilience. ? For Somatic and Movement-Based Therapy – If traditional talk therapy has felt limiting, I offer a body-centered approach using gentle movement, breathwork, and mindfulness to help you connect with your emotions, and regulate your nervous system. This is especially useful for trauma, depression, and stress-related challenges. ? For Expressive Arts & Creative Interventions – Depending on your comfort level, we may integrate art, music, journaling, or guided movement to explore emotions in nonverbal ways. These approaches can be helpful for processing deep emotions, increasing self-awareness, and reconnecting with joy and self-expression. Throughout our work together, my goal is to create a supportive space where you feel safe, seen, and empowered—whether that’s through words, movement, or stillness. Each session is structured to meet you where you are, ensuring that you leave with practical tools and a deeper sense of connection to yourself.
